Toronto MozCamp in September
Mark Finkle posts, “We are planning a developer event in Toronto for mid September. It will be a bit more formal than our previous Developer Days. The plan is to create a schedule full of sessions covering Mozilla technology. If you have never used Mozilla technology or just want to learn more things about the different parts of the platform, this event is for you. Seneca College has graciously offered to host the event. If you’re interested in coming, sign up so we can get an idea of the turn out. Post suggestions for sessions as well.” More details, including a list of some of the topics you can expect to be covered, are available at Mark’s weblog.

Firefox 3 launch: collecting pictures, videos
Alix writes, “The launch of Firefox was amazing with events around the world: download day fests, launch parties, and more! We would like to collect your pictures, videos, and stories from the launch to share with everyone. To do this we have created a new group on spreadfirefox: Firefox 3 launch archive where you can post links to your memories of the launch. If you posted your pictures to flickr and would like to share them, please tag them as ff3launch so we can easily find them.” For more information about the archive, please see Alix’s weblog post.

Introducing Snowl
Myk Melez recently introduced his new project, “Snowl”, via the Mozilla Labs weblog. “Conversing (a.k.a. messaging) is a common online activity, and a number of desktop and web applications enable it. But with an increasing variety of protocols and providers, it’s getting harder and harder to keep track of all your conversations. Could the web browser help you follow and participate in online discussions? Snowl is an experiment to answer that question.” For lots more information about Snowl, including where to get the prototype and how to participate in the discussion, see the Mozilla Labs’ blog post.

Fennec M6 available
The latest about:mobile newsletter reports that the latest milestone of Fennec — Mozilla’s new mobile effort that is in the early development stages — is now available. “We’ve made the sixth milestone release of Fennec. Fennec M6 includes a couple of major features. It has initial support for a tab-like interface, support for ‘mailto:’ and ‘tel:’ urls, and some stability fixes vs. M5.” More information is available in the release notes, and Mark Finkle has written a post about this latest release.

Building the world we want, not the one we have
Mike Schroepfer has written a long post outlining why the new support for the “video” and “audio” tags in Firefox 3.1 is important. “Right now millions of users can view videos in their web browsers, but it requires one of several proprietary plug-ins which support proprietary formats. By shipping HTML5 ‘video’ and ‘audio’ with royalty free open source formats in Firefox we hope to make these formats ubiquitous through common usage. Royalty free open source formats will allow all web-browser makers to enable native video and audio playback on all platforms, devices, and environments, without restrictions. Ubiquitous access to content. This is the world we want.” Read Schroepfer’s full post for more detail and for answers to some of the more commonly asked questions about these technologies.

Camino 1.6.3 released
The latest release of Camino has been announced over on the Camino blog. “We’ve just released Camino 1.6.3, a maintenance release which contains various security and stability updates to Camino 1.6.x. All users are urged to update.” More information can be found in the weblog post.

Mozilla embedding API update
Chris Blizzard has posted an update about the Mozilla embedding API. “Pelle Johnsen has been doing a lot of the work and is maintaining a set of pages on the new embedding API. Included there are build instructions for the platforms we support, a link to the repository that has the code, API documentation, and a todo list.” For more embedding API news, see Chris’ blog post.
